GS1 logistics standards
GS1 standards in practice, SSCC, GTIN, and GS1-128 without jargon
SSCC, GTIN, and GS1-128 are three acronyms that come up in every logistics and retail chain. What are they exactly, and when do you use which?
By Tim van der Hoorn
GS1 standards are the international language of the supply chain. An SSCC identifies a unique logistic unit (pallet, carton), a GTIN identifies a trade item (a product), and GS1-128 is the barcode symbology that lets you put these codes alongside attributes like batch number or expiry date on a single label. We work through each concept with a real-world example.
