EAN-13
The 13-digit barcode on consumer products, technically a GTIN-13.
Last updated:
EAN-13 is the best-known barcode in Europe: the 13-digit code scanned at the checkout. The number inside is a GTIN-13, built from your GS1 company prefix, an item reference, and a check digit.
The EAN-13 is meant for consumer units at the point of sale. It deliberately contains only one data field (the item number); batch and expiry date do not belong in it. For outer cases and pallets you use a GTIN-14 in an ITF-14 or GS1-128 barcode.
Common label mistakes: printing too small (below the minimum 80% magnification), too little quiet zone next to the code, a miscalculated check digit, or a bar pattern distorted by low print resolution. Print at the right size and check new designs with the barcode validator before they go to production.
