GS1 company prefix

The unique number GS1 assigns to your company, which all your GTINs and SSCCs start with.

Last updated:

The GS1 company prefix is the foundation under all your GS1 codes. You request it from your national GS1 organization; after that, all your item numbers (GTIN), pallet codes (SSCC), and location codes (GLN) start with this number. That makes them traceable to your company worldwide.

The prefix length determines how many numbers you can issue: a longer prefix is cheaper but leaves room for fewer items and shipments. When applying, you therefore estimate how many items and logistics units you will need in the coming years.

A common mistake is "borrowing" numbers: inventing a GTIN or using someone else's prefix. That works until a retailer checks the number in the GS1 database and rejects the delivery. Manage issued numbers centrally, and let your label software increment SSCC serials automatically so two pallets never end up with the same code.
