Variable data printing

Printing labels from one template where fields like batch, date, and serial number are filled automatically per print.

Last updated:

With variable data printing, the label design is a template: the layout, logos, and fixed texts are locked, while fields such as item number, batch code, expiry date, and serial number are filled automatically per print from a data source.

That data source is ideally your ERP or WMS system. At an order pick or production batch, the system sends the right values to the print engine, which merges them with the template and sends the result to the printer. Nobody retypes anything, and the label matches the order by definition.

The alternative, manual entry in a labeling program, is the biggest error source in the labeling process: typos in batch numbers, a wrong date, an old item number. Use the ROI calculator to work out what those errors cost, and read our blog on how an ERP connection eliminates retyping entirely.
